Learn how to take your climbing out of the gym and into the mountains. Outdoor Pursuits offers a number of outdoor rock climbing and ice climbing courses to help you improve your skills and find your next adventure.

Intro to Outdoor Climbing

Spend the day climbing at a local crag and meet fellow adventurers! This beginner-friendly course covers outdoor top-rope basics—gear, techniques and where to climb. No experience needed. All equipment and transportation provided. Participants must be able to hike up to two miles with a 20 lb. pack on rocky terrain.

Pride Climb

Celebrate LGBTQIA+ History Month with a day of outdoor top-rope climbing and community building! Open to all LGBTQ+ folks and allies—no experience needed. We’ll cover climbing basics, gear and local spots. All equipment and transportation provided. Participants must be able to hike up to two miles with a 20 lb. pack on rocky terrain.

Gym to Crag

Ready to take your climbing outside? This course helps you transition from gym to crag with hands-on practice in:
  • Anchors: Build and clean sport anchors for lead or top-rope climbing
  • Rappelling: Learn safe techniques for descending after cleaning an anchor
  • Outdoor Climbing: Spend the day applying your skills on real rock
All gear and transportation provided. Participants must be top-rope belay certified at the CU Climbing Gym and able to hike up to two miles with a 15–20 lb. pack. Lead experience is encouraged, and a lead clinic is recommended beforehand.
