Other areas of study include the art of the Caribbean and its diasporas, historiography and institutional histories of Latinx art, and intersections between the “traditional” arts, ecology, activism, materiality, and health in New Mexico and Puerto Rico. Her current book project examines the work of artists in New Mexico and Texas during the long 1970s through the lens of la resolana, a northern New Mexico Spanish term used to refer to the sunny, wind-protected side of a building where villagers gather to converse. From the late 1960s onward, Chicano activists in northern New Mexico theorized and reactivated the notion of resolana as method and critical praxis by gathering community-sourced anecdotes, proverbs, recipes, remedies, and artistic techniques from elder generations, which were then documented and disseminated toward grassroots pedagogical ends.

Christine Bachman's teaching and research focus on the forms and functions of medieval art and its significance within a geographically-expansive worldview. Her research concentrates on early medieval manuscripts with an emphasis on materials and production processes, the construction and dissemination of decorative motifs, and artistic connections between northwestern Europe and the wider world in the eighth century. In 2020, she curated the online exhibit, “A Liberal Arts Education for the (Middle) Ages: Texts, Translations, and Study” for the Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies and in 2019, curated the exhibit “The Gothic Library: Medieval Revival Designs for Books and Their Spaces” for the Winterthur Library.

Upcoming Events

Visiting Artist Lecture Series

We are excited to offer a full semester of amazing visiting artist lectures. Eschewing categorization, his expansive, nomadic body of work traverses the forms of photographs, artist books, performances, the Internet, mail art, sound, rubber stamps, gastronomy, and natural environments. His work examines questions of distance between places, people and time in order to test the possibilities of appropriating, undermining or even erasing these distances. Using image, text and objects, his works circulate and operate independently of himself, penetrating ever more effectively the intimate sphere. When encountering his works– in the postal system, libraries, or the airport lost-and-found services– our attention to the infinitesimal, inherent loopholes and alternative logics, and the imaginary comes to the fore. The structure is 3-weeks of on-site fieldwork followed by 3-weeks of asynchronous online work and reflection. The program puts students in touch with various landscapes and is focused on teaching site and context-based approaches to art creation. The Field School is designed as an experiential course, meaning that students learn about places and context through being in the field and making artwork on-site. While living and working in the field, students create and discuss various art-making approaches with environments such as prairies, forests and waterways. Students may explore many mediums including: writing, photography, sculpture, drawing and video and sound recording.

Topics that are discussed and of which students work with in for this course are: nature and process; ecology; conservation; highways and byways; non-urban phenomenology; climate change; borderlands; pastoralism; wayfaring; waterways; pilgrimages; colonialism; ownership and identity; agriculture; idealized and ignored landscapes; and geomorphology. The 2025 session will travel to the San Luis Valley and Western Slope of Colorado, finishing with an exhibition at the Mountain Research Station near Nederland. The seminar revolved around artist’s books and publishing as an artistic practice. We approached the notions of “book” and “publishing” in an open-ended manner by placing them in conversation with other artistic practices. The books presented in the exhibition explore aspects of remembering, preserving, imagining, transforming, translating, scrolling, and assembling.

Artists: Andrea Caretto, Ethan Cherry, Brionna Garcia, Cesar Herrejon, Emily Moyer, Luis E.

Please note this course is off-campus and a signed university waiver and active health insurance is required.

Faculty News

Melanie Yazzie, Professor, Printmaking

Recently featured in the Arts & Sciences Magazine.

Art and transformation are inherently connected, prof says

For Melanie Yazzie, professor of art practices and head of printmaking in the Department of Art and Art History at the 91PORN, art and transformation are intrinsically connected.

Tue, 15 Apr 2025 14:56:07 +0000 Kirsten Stoltz 1405 at /artandarthistory
